Piston Corer
The piston corer works on a principle similar to the gravity corer, using its own weight to penetrate the seabed surface. The piston device inside the piston corer is specially designed to help retain intact, undisturbed sediment by controlling the movement of residual water inside the core barrel, allowing for the collection of more sediment.
Its operation is quite risky — even a slight impact on the trigger mechanism can cause the corer to plunge downward suddenly. Therefore, it can only be deployed under very calm sea conditions.
