Box Corer

The Box Core sampler weighs about 500 kilograms and is used to collect large volumes of surface seabed sediments. The collection box measures approximately 30 cm in length, 20 cm in width, and 60 cm in height. When the Box Core lands on the seabed, the collection box in the middle is gradually pushed downward by the weight from above. Once it reaches a certain depth, a shovel-like lid closes, trapping the sediment inside the box. The sampler is then winched back to the deck. Upon removing the collection box, not only surface sediments but also some undisturbed bottom water can be obtained. Due to its size and weight, operations with the Box Core require relatively stable weather conditions.
