New R/V New Ocean Researcher 1 Sets Sail — Leading Taiwan into a New Era of Ocean Exploration

On August 25, 2020, the "New Ocean Researcher 1," managed by the Institute of Oceanography at National Taiwan University, was officially commissioned. Equipped with a cross-disciplinary exploration system and enhanced endurance, it succeeds the original "Ocean Researcher 1" after 35 years of service. This new platform integrates geological sonar, water column profilers, and atmospheric sampling instruments, marking the beginning of a new era of synchronized, multidisciplinary exploration of Kuroshio dynamics, deep-sea hydrothermal vents, and extreme ecosystems.

Seaglider Underwater Glider

The 1.8-meter streamlined body is equipped with sensors for temperature, salinity, depth, dissolved oxygen, chlorophyll fluorescence, and optical backscatter. Weighing only 53 kg, it features a lightweight design with endurance lasting several months. Real-time profile data is transmitted via satellite antenna, making it ideal for long-term monitoring of oceanographic and hydrographic conditions.
